This resolution expresses the Senate's support for a sustainable peace and democracy in South Sudan. Further, it calls on the United States and other countries to take certain steps to implement the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, monitor human rights abuses and corruption, and support the renewal of an arms embargo in South Sudan.
This resolution expresses the sense of the Senate that
- the United States is committed to supporting peace in South Sudan and should continue providing assistance to meet the humanitarian needs of the South Sudanese people;
- the incumbent government and all other signatories of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan should work to implement that agreement and establish a Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity;
- the Department of State should monitor implementation of the United Nations' South Sudan mandate and ensure any return or relocation of internally displaced persons from UN protection of civilian sites is safe, voluntary, and dignified;
- the State Department should monitor human rights abuse and corruption in South Sudan and support peacebuilding, conflict prevention, transitional justice, and reconciliation efforts;
- the Department of the Treasury should use best efforts to prevent, investigate, and mitigate money laundering activities;
- the United States should support implementation and renewal of the UN Security Council arms embargo in South Sudan.
