Veterans' Identity Theft Protection Act of 2016
This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to discontinue using Social Security account numbers to identify individuals in its information systems by the following deadlines:
- for all veterans submitting new claims for benefits, by not later than two years after the date of enactment of this bill; and
- for all other individuals, by not later than five years after such date.
The VA may use a Social Security account number to identify an individual in a VA information system only if the VA must use such number to obtain information from an information system that is not under its jurisdiction.
