- Amendment Number
- 396
- Description
- Amendment sought to require the Interior and Agriculture Departments to declare lands unsuitable for mining if such activities cause significant damage to special characteristics of the area in which the lands are located.
- Purpose
- An amendment to modify the bill's provisions regarding "unsuitability reviews" of federal lands. The amendment would require the Interior and Agriculture Departments to declare lands unsuitable for mining if these activities would cause "significant damage" to special characteristics of the area in which the lands are located, and this damage cannot be prevented through conditions on mining permits. The amendment also would expand the bill's list of "special characteristics" to include lands designated by the Bureau of Land Management as "Areas of Critical Environmental Concern", and Forest Service Research Natural Areas.
